Artists Statement

Diana Vanstone’s “Face ID” is a provocative painting that challenges our perceptions of intimacy and technology. The full frontal nude figure, positioned in an erotic pose, becomes a canvas for exploring the intersection of human desire and modern-day connectivity.

The artist’s bold brushstrokes capture the subject’s vulnerability, as if she’s surrendering to the gaze of the viewer. Yet, simultaneously, her “unlocking” gesture – evoking the familiar iconography of smartphones – suggests a newfound agency, as if she’s embracing the power of self-expression in the digital age.

Vanstone’s use of light and shadow creates a sense of tension. Drawing our attention to the subtle interplay between flesh and technology. The painting becomes a meditation on the blurred lines between public and private spaces.  It invites us to consider the ways in which we curate our online personas and the consequences of sharing intimate moments with others.

Through “Face ID,” Vanstone probes the complexities of contemporary life.  Where our digital footprints increasingly shape our relationships and sense of self. This painting is a powerful commentary on the tensions between our innermost selves and the virtual personas we present to the world.  It is challenging us to reexamine our understanding of intimacy, vulnerability, and connection in the age of social media.

The work’s bold, unapologetic style demands attention, refusing to be ignored or dismissed. Instead, “Face ID” beckons us to engage with its themes, inviting us to confront the ways in which we navigate the intricate dance between technology and humanity.
