Art Print Reproduction

Compared to most high street printers, that print at 360 dpi with 2 passes (no. of times a print head passes over an area), our Giclee printing is set to 1440 dpi, with 8 passes.

A brief history of giclée printing /archival pigment prints

Giclee prints are often known in exhibitions as archival pigment prints, this term is increasingly becoming the standard term used in the art world.

The word Giclée (“gee-clay”), is based on the French verb “gicler” which means “to squirt or spray” and was originally coined by printmaker Jack Duganne in 1991. Giclée printing is a fine art digital printing method using specialist archival pigment inks and acid-free papers; creating gallery-quality inkjet prints with excellent depth of colour, longevity and stability.

The print process involves squirting microscopic dots of pigment ink onto high-quality fine art or photographic papers using sophisticated high-end inkjet printers with exceptional accuracy, wide tonal range and colour gamut.

Studies have shown that Giclee Prints colour vividness can last in excess of 200 years with tests by independent bodies such as Wilhelm Research and printer manufacturers such as Epson. This gives assurance to collectors and art buyers of this type of printing method.

Giclee Prints advantages over other print methods, include:

  • They provide a perfect solution for artists and photographers who do not wish to go to the expense of mass-producing their work using Litho but prefer to print on demand.
  • Print on demand means a single artwork can be made available in a number of papers and finishes. There are a much greater number of matt papers to choose from, incorporating different weights, textures and whiteness.
  • The latest Giclee printers provide greater accuracy and depth of colour, ensuring faithful reproductions of originals. There are more vivid and saturated colours than C-Type or digital offset, due to the bright pigments used to make up the inks.
  • Better longevity; a Giclee print will outlast a lithographic print and other technologies by up to six times.
  • Giclee prints are widely accepted by art buyers, galleries and museums as archival, collectable pieces.

Certificate of Authenticity

Each Giclee art print purchased comes accompanied with a unique micro embossed label attached to the back of the print, and a matching certificate of authenticity signed, and dated by Diana.
