Artists Statement
In “Pants out,” Diana Vanstone presents a scathing critique of societal norms, casting a wry gaze upon the absurdities of our times. This provocative still life, depicting a woman’s torso shrouded by her own underwear. Hanging from hooks like some sort of macabre curtain, it is an incisive commentary on the performative nature of modesty.
The painting’s title, “Pants out,” is a clever play on words. It references both the literal and figurative hang-ups that govern our behaviour. Vanstone’s use of everyday objects – underwear, hooks, fabric – imbues the work with a sense of familiarity. Making it all the more jarring when confronted with the stark reality; we’re all just wearing a thin veil of modesty.
At its core, “Pants out” is an exploration of the fragility and absurdity of our collective psyche. Vanstone invites us to confront the contradictions inherent in our desire for privacy and exhibitionism. The need to be seen and yet remain hidden. This painting is a clever subversion of expectations, upending the notion that art must always be about grand themes or sweeping landscapes.
The artist’s inspiration for this work stems from her own experiences navigating the complexities of modern society. “I wanted to poke fun at the idea that we’re all just wearing a mask, hiding our true selves beneath layers of expectation,” Vanstone explains. “In ‘Pants out,’ I aimed to capture the absurdity of our attempts to control and conceal.”
Through her masterful handling of color and composition, Vanstone creates an environment that is both humorous and unsettling – a perfect reflection of our own contradictory desires. This painting demands attention. It’s an invitation to enter the world where societal norms are laid bare, revealing the absurdities and contradictions that lie beneath.
