Artists Statement

In “Mannequin,” Diana Vanstone presents a paradoxical tableau that piques and perturbs. It invites the viewer to confront the enigmatic intersection of the human and the inanimate. The artist’s gaze is fixed upon the torso of a mannequin, its surface cracked and worn, yet eerily lifelike. As if awakening from a long slumber, the mannequin’s “skin” begins to tingle with a newfound awareness.  Her very existence a testament to the power of imagination.

It becomes clear that Vanstone is not merely presenting a visually striking tableau, but rather probing the very nature of identity. What does it mean to be alive, to be human, when our experiences are filtered through the lens of perception? The mannequin, once a mere prop, now assumes a strange, proto-human quality, as if it has finally discovered its own existence.

The spider, too, becomes a potent symbol, embodying both the power and the fragility that lies at the heart of life. Its very presence serves as a reminder that even in the most mundane or seemingly artificial of environments, there exists a deeper, more primal reality waiting t.

In “Mannequin,” Vanstone presents us with a work that is at once both abstract and concrete.  It’s meaning lingering just beyond the reaches of our grasp. It is an invitation to enter the realm of the imagination.  One where the boundaries between human and nonhuman, become blurred and malleable. And it is here, in this liminal space, that we may discover new truths about ourselves and our place within the world.
