Artists Statement

In “Symbol of Life,” Diana Vanstone distills the absurdity and anxiety of the Covid era into a poignant metaphor. One that critiques our society’s fixation on hand sanitiser during the pandemic.

The composition is deceptively simple.  Inviting the viewer to approach the piece with a sense of familiarity. But as one gazes upon the delicate petals and the slender stem, the symbolism becomes clear.  This is no ordinary flower, but a potent reminder of our society’s desperate attempts to control the uncontrollable.

Vanstone’s use of subtlety is a masterstroke, as she allows the viewer to slowly unravel the layers of meaning embedded in this seemingly innocuous still life. The rose, often a symbol of love and beauty, here serves as a stark commentary on our collective priorities during the pandemic. In an era where personal hygiene became a matter of national concern, the humble hand sanitizer bottle was elevated to an unprecedented level of importance.

The vase itself is rendered in a soft, golden light, evoking a sense of warmth and comfort. This is a deliberate choice, as Vanstone seeks to underscore the irony of our society’s fixation on cleanliness. By placing this symbol of purity within a fragile, organic form (the rose), she cleverly highlights the tension between our desire for order and the inherent messiness of life.

Through her nuanced exploration of symbolism, Vanstone encourages us to reexamine our relationship with material culture and the values we assign to everyday objects. In doing so, she offers a powerful commentary on our shared experiences during the pandemic – one that will resonate long after the crisis has passed.

In “Symbol of Life,” Diana Vanstone masterfully distills the anxiety and absurdity of the Covid era.  Morphing it into a potent, and visually striking work.  It invites viewers to pause, reflect, and reconsider their priorities. As we navigate the complexities of post-pandemic reality, this painting serves as a poignant reminder of our collective values.  Noteably the ways in which they can be both beautiful and flawed.
