Artists Statement

In “Boob’balloon,” Diana Vanstone presents a provocative and thought-provoking portrait that challenges societal norms and our expectations around the human body. At its core is an anatomically accurate depiction of a woman’s breast.  However, with a twist: instead of a nipple, we find a tied balloon suspended from a string.

The juxtaposition of the delicate, rounded shape of the breast against the inflated, artificial form of the balloon is jarring and unexpected.  It prompts us to question our assumptions about what constitutes “natural” or “artificial.” The balloon’s tied condition adds an air of fragility and vulnerability, highlighting the tension between containment and release.

Vanstone’s bold decision to render the nipple as a balloon serves as a metaphor for the societal pressures placed on women’s bodies. The string that binds the balloon represents the constraints and expectations imposed upon us, from societal norms to cultural ideals.

The painting also invites viewers to consider the performative aspect of femininity.  Where women often feel the need to conform to certain standards of beauty and behaviour.   The breast itself appears smooth and unblemished, a testament to the beauty and fragility of the human form. The subtle play of light on its surface adds a sense of depth and dimensionality, drawing our gaze inward.

Vanstone’s use of color is similarly deliberate, opting for a palette that is both calming and unsettling. The soft pinks and whites of the breast are juxtaposed against the bright, poppy red of the balloon nipple, creating a visual tension that pulls us in.
