Artists Statement

Diana Vanstone’s “Price Tag” is a thought-provoking painting that confronts the societal norms surrounding the objectification of women. The full frontal nude figure, positioned in an erotic pose, is striking with a bar code covering her vagina. This bold work seeks to challenge the negative stereotypes that often reduce women to their physical appearance and value them solely for their sexuality.

By incorporating the ubiquitous bar code symbol, Vanstone cleverly critiques the commodification of the female form. The painting is a commentary on the ways in which women are perceived and valued in our society.  It highlights the absurdity of reducing an individual’s worth to a numerical price tag.

Vanstone’s use of bold brushstrokes and vivid color palette draws the viewer’s attention to the subject’s vulnerability, inviting us to consider the implications of objectifying the human form. The painting becomes a powerful statement about the need for gender equality and the importance of valuing individuals beyond their physical appearance.

Through “Price Tag,” Vanstone prompts us to reexamine our societal norms.  To challenge the harmful stereotypes that perpetuate the objectification of women. This thought-provoking work demands attention, refusing to be ignored or dismissed. Instead, it beckons us to engage with its themes.  Inviting us to confront the ways in which we can work towards a more equitable and respectful society for all individuals.
